Ever so often, I get asked by friends, questions of the trade. “What is the best camera” “how do I use my camera” “what editing programs do you use”…

all wonderful questions. A couple times in the past I had even held little tiny workshops or personal mentoring days where I would be available to answer every question they had and show them some tricks and tips with their camera.

This year, I have been asked to bring it back. In past few months, I have been writing down all the little and big things that I have learned over the years and created a digital PDF that shares how to capture your own little moments in life. Being totally unscripted – being real, raw and in the moment. Because after all, our life is not posed and perfect all the time. In fact, those adorable Instagram photos we all are drawn too – you would be amazed on what life looks like outside those 4 adorable corners.

With every client and friend that asks for advice, I say the same thing.. Just capture the moment! No need for special lights, perfectly ironed clothing or an Anthropology kitchen. Although, I highly admire and drool over those moms that do have those things 😉 but, if you think about what has purpose in life, what makes your heart happy and what sings to your soul… it is the memory of the moment. It is capturing that funny face your baby has started doing, or a funny “pose” or super hero stance your pre-schooler thinks is the most awesome. It can even be the way your teenager looks like as they are in their room being who they are. Life is precious. So precious. I am passionate about what is real and what we are blessed to have. Even if it is a living room that is currently the holding place for every piece of clean or dirty laundry.

Life Unscripted workbook, is created to teach you to breath and click. It is to teach you different perspectives and angles and show you how to achieve capturing a moment in any lighting situation that happens every day.

This is probably my last session I will ever get with this amazing family. Sadly and yet, exciting, they are getting ready to plant new roots in a new home town over on the East Coast.

It has been so much fun watching this family grow and love from their first new baby to now. I truly am blessed to have such amazing families to photograph and document, but I do admit that this family really knows how to just have fun together, laugh, and make memories!

Recently they invited me over for some family time and breakfast. Here is a little Pure Moments Film of their morning together!

I love making films for families and even for my own family. My kids will sit for hours watching their films and my clients films on the tv. I know this will be something that they will treasure for a very long time.

If you are a photographer and are interested in learning how to create your own films, I highly suggest Emily Mitchell’s class Everyday Films.

The class is full of information and is easy to follow. You can also find Emily on FACEBOOK

My nerves were all over the place – was I going to be able to capture moments that had meaning?

A few weeks ago I was asked by Susan from DS Connections NW, if I would come and do team photos for their annual Step Up to DS walk in Spokane. I actually met Susan last year when I was planning on doing a community event for down syndrome children, giving them a pirate party for fun! When the event was not published as it was suppose to, I took it very personal and felt terrible for these families that never got to share their story with our community. So when Susan asked me to step in to do photos for this year, I was very happy to do so.

The Step UP for Down Syndrome Walk (formerly known as the Buddy Walk) was developed as a way to reach out to friends, family, and co-workers to promote awareness and inclusion for people with Down syndrome. It is also designed to raise funds for local and national education, research and advocacy programs.

The Step UP Walk is an easy one mile walk in which anyone can participate without special training. Hundreds of thousands of people take part in different walks from coast to coast and around the world each year to show their support for Down syndrome awareness.

People throughout the Inland Northwest whose lives have been touched by Down syndrome will join with members of our local business community in helping to raise awareness of the many abilities that people with Down syndrome possess and to celebrate the many ways they contribute to the benefit of both our professional and civic communities.

The walk was held at Discovery Park in Spokane, which is an adorable park! There were all kinds of things for the kids and the families to do together before and after the walk started. Raffle items, American Ninja course, photo booth, arts & crafts, bubbles, a happy clown that makes balloon animals, hats and swords and a sweet little spot for the kids to be in the Hall of Fame photo wall. Each year they take a photo and each year they can look back to see how much they have grown. And then of course, the team photo area – which is where I was.

The families were all in happy spirits and it was wonderful meeting all these beautiful children that were full of precious personalities. Everyone played, danced, laughed, and joined together to help make a difference for DS Connections NW.

Here is a list of the vendors that also participated in the walk event.

Friday September 8, 2017, I was able to witness and document one of the most amazing – miraculous things that can happen for a woman. Birth.

I have been blessed through my photography years to be able to document the birth of a child and each time it is the most beautiful thing to witness. I get so emotional with happiness which usually shows in tears. But I can’t help it.  And how can you not be just speechless when you realize and see that a BABY has been growing inside of a mom and now you get to see it right in front of you- to touch it and love it. Amazing is the only word that I can think of using, but it truly is just… amazing.

I have 5 beautiful children and had lost 1 baby just before he/she grew to be 20 weeks. And even though that moment in life was harder than I had prepared it to be, still the miracle of a baby growing and developing inside me… truly what a beautiful gift we are given as women. I had to talk my ovaries down a few times and swallow a few times as I let my mind and heart and body, crave another baby of my own.

Being able to see a fresh new baby and being able to take time to get lost in all the fine little details like counting all the little wrinkles on their fingers, how delicate their fingernails look, the tiny eyelashes, their mouth and how cute they are when already trying to suckle on something. Every little thing is a miracle and my heart is just overfilled with joy on how our God is so amazing.

Ok, I’m trying to reel it as I am getting all emotional.

Friday, a good friend, sister in Christ, client – was able to get permission from her doctor to have me there with her and her hubby during their scheduled c-section. This was so exciting to me. I was just getting back from vacation, getting my kids back on their school schdeule and now I get to document a friend during her c-section. This was over the moon exciting. But, I do want to share a little bit about her pregnancy journey because hopefully you too will feel how meaningful this was.

For her 3rd pregnancy, she was experiencing some painful moments which caused her to go into an early labor via c-section. She had a some “window” on her uterus which can be very dangerous for both mom and baby. I was able to be there for the birth of baby Ezekiel – documenting the prep before surgery and was there waiting for them after recovery. You can see their video HERE.

For this pregnancy, she knew that precautions were needed and her scheduled c-section would be earlier in case there was another chance of a uterine window. It was much better to be safe and plan for this pregnancy. They also decided to wait to find out if they were blessed with a boy or a girl. I had a feeling they were having another girl, but a boy seemed to be what others were guessing. I knew this was going to be exciting for them to find out together when they got to see baby. Such an awesome feeling of knowing at that moment.

6am I arrived at Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d’Alene and we all hung out, joked around, prayed and waited til it was her time. They handed out the usual lovely cover up for her hubby and I to wear in the OR. John, the dad, looked like papa smurf and I looked like a giant marshmallow. But I couldn’t wait to bring it home for my kids to play in, I knew that they would think it was awesome (and they did).

I was given stern instructions on where I could not go or touch, but I was more than happy to obey because this was a special treat for me- and for this momma. This is most likely their last baby so I understand the feeling of wanting to document everything as much as they could. Once in the OR, the nurses and doctors were amazing. The lead nurse was grabbing me and pulling me to the best spot all over the OR to get the best view. And when there was going to be another good spot, the ushered me over to the other spot. At one point, the nurse even had all the doctors stop and pose for a photo.

Just before they reached baby, Dr. Henneberg noticed that this momma not only had another uterine window but it was much bigger than last time. If you have never heard of a uterine window before, it is like your uterus is as thin as saran wrap giving mom and baby a dangerous situation. The doctor, although amazed, called it a miracle!

When baby came out, it took a moment to realize they just had a girl. They totally didn’t expect a girl. I totally did (happy dance).

Here are some photos of baby Chole and her birthday!

June 6, 2017

When I had my last baby, I tried in every possible way to savior and cherish every little baby moment.  I knew he was my last and I tried to remember every day the best that I could in every sense I had.

One of my favorite things to do with my little one was to sit in a warm bath with him, letting him rest on my chest and watch his little toes floated in the water.

These days I am moping up splashed water and a tub filled with toys, but my memory of that special bonding moment is forever tucked away in my heart of memories. I only wish I took the time to ask my hubby to document just a moment of that memory.

Recently, a mom of a handsome baby boy contacted me for a mommy & me milk bath. I was so excited to be able to capture a mom share this moment with her little one.

Baby Eden is a handsome, chunky, BEAUTIFUL baby boy with eyes that connect to yours and hands that are curious to explore the world. Later, I found out that this was the first time that this momma has spent time with her little guy in the tub.

I filled the bath with my favorite bath mix from Bebe de Luxe and sprinkled some flowers and greenery in the water. Next, I sit back (in a non creepy way- lol) and capture some bonding moments between mom and baby.

Baby Eden was very curious about all the floating flowers and kept wanting to grab and chew on them. Which I don’t blame him. The bath mix from Bebe de Luxe is not only soft and lovely feeling, but has a great coconut flavor. And totally safe to ingest – just in case!

But the moment that tugged at my heart and get all weepy is the moment Eden needed a little moment to fill his tummy up.

Do you remember when you had to stop for a few moments and feed your little one? Do you remember how even though that moment was a force to make you stop and breath, it was the most beautiful moment of the day. It is like a reminder to stop in the busy of the world and focus on something so amazing that really no words can describe it. Something that can make your heart feel so many things and make you cry happy tears.

Baby Eden took every moment of the time he asked from his momma and brought her back to focus on just him. To have no worries of the world surrounding them. It was just her… and him.

I stood back for a moment to give them some personal space – to not feel that I was constantly there as a stranger with a camera. And then I witnesses it.

Love.

Eden reached up with his tiny chunky hand and gently touched his mom’s face. It was if he was telling her that all is right in the world as long as he was in her arms.

I have bottle fed and breast fed my babies – and it doesn’t matter the way you need to nourish your baby – what matters is you are letting them stop you from looking at the world around you and seeing this beautiful creature that was created just for you- in every perfect way God created.. in your arms, just focusing on you.

This milk bath session was so refreshing me to. It is so easy to get caught up in the same everyday life and even sometimes in the photo world. It blesses my heart when someone reaches out to me to capture a moment, a memory, a milestone and I just get to witness God’s amazing glory- all right in front of my lens!
